Giving - a way to participate in God's work

Daniel turned 27 today!
  • Luke 6:38 "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Unfortunately, we Christians are pretty bad at giving money. I don't know the statistics in Sweden, but in the United States  those who are active in a church gives only 2% of their salary to the church/mission. That means that they have 98% left to themselves, excluding taxes. It is easy to see giving as something hard, something you do not want to do but know you should. Why is it like that? Where is the joy of giving?

I've always been pretty mingy, both when it comes to myself and others. But now I've married one of the most generous people I know. Daniel is what we would call a "cheerful giver" and sometimes I'm jealous of how easy it is for him to give, but at the same time it challenges me give more! Unlike me he actually enjoy giving and that's a quality that I admire! One day I'll be as generous as Daniel ..

I think the problem is with our motif, or lack of motif, when we give/don't give. We need to realize the meaning of our giving! God is not dependent on "our" money, he owns all the resources in the world and always makes sure that money is provided where needed. So that's not what it's about.
Giving is very much about you and your relationship with God. You shouldn't view giving as something tedious or difficult, but an opportunity for you to participate in the work God is doing! This is perfect for those who are living a "normal life": working full time, driving children to activities etc, and simply don't have time to personally engage themselves in mission. By giving you also participate and expand the kingdom of God!

And we'll never have to worry about giving "too much" since God has promised to always give us what we need!

P.S. It's not even your money, God has just given them to you to manage during your short time here on earth!
  • Matthew 6:25-33 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Challenge of the week
  • To give of course! Ask God what he wants you to give to, and give more than you feel like, you are investing in eternity!
